Private Label

How to Build a Private Label Craft Supply Collection

Updated July 6, 2026 · by the Qula Craft sales team

Quick answer: Private label means we produce, pack and label craft supplies under your brand instead of ours. The value is margin and repeatability: a kilogram of bulk product becomes 60–100 branded retail units. Start with 6–8 SKUs, one packaging format, and a label that already carries the required safety text.

A collection reads as a range when the packaging is consistent, not when the SKU count is high.

1. The margin math that makes private label work

Bulk craft supplies are cheap per kilogram and expensive per gram at retail — that spread is your business. An illustrative walk-through (numbers vary by product and market; treat as structure, not a promise):

StepExample
1kg bulk mixone wholesale line item
Split into 15g bottles~65 branded units
Typical craft retail price$2.5–$4.5 per bottle in US/EU marketplaces
Your costs per unitproduct + bottle + label + fill labor + freight share

The lesson: packaging and freight — not the product itself — decide your unit economics. Choose the format before you negotiate the mix. Our packaging comparison guide · Slime business starter supply checklist covers cost bands per format.

2. Pick 6–8 SKUs, not 20

First collections fail by going wide. A tight launch that reads as a “range” on one shelf:

  • 2 hero mixes — your signature themes, the ones in your marketing photos.
  • 3–4 core sellers — proven shapes: fruit mix, heart mix, star mix, letter beads. See the full catalog for candidates.
  • 1–2 seasonal rotators — swapped per quarter, planned with the seasonal calendar.

Every SKU shares the same bottle, label template and font — only the product and one color band change. That is what makes a $500 label print run look like a brand.

3. Packaging tiers — enter where your channel is

TierFormatFits

StandardPET bottle or wide-mouth jar + wrap labelAmazon, boutiques, nail supply shops
KitCompartment box, 6–12 wellsDIY kits, subscription boxes, gifting
PremiumPrinted gift box + insertHoliday sets, B2B corporate gifts

You can mix tiers: bulk bags for your production line plus bottles for retail. Details and photos on the private label packaging page.

4. Label content — get it right the first print

Reprinting labels because a warning was missing is the most avoidable cost in this niche. Minimum content: brand, product name, net weight, “Decorative craft material — not edible”, “Small parts — choking hazard, not for children under 3” where relevant, material note, batch/SKU code, your contact, barcode for marketplaces. Full wording templates are in the safety labeling guide.

4b. What custom shapes really cost

Private label usually starts with your packaging on our stock goods. The next step — a shape nobody else has — is where buyers underestimate the cost, because it is not a design fee, it is hardware.

A bespoke resin shape needs a mould, and a flexible mould yields roughly 25 to 100 castings before it loses fine detail. That means an exclusive shape carries a recurring tooling cost across the life of the product, not a one-off charge. Custom clay canes work differently — polymer clay is cured at around 129–135 °C and one cane slices into a very large number of pieces, so a custom colourway or mix is usually far cheaper to originate than a custom moulded shape.

The sequence that works: your packaging on stock goods first, then a custom mix or colourway, and only then a bespoke moulded shape once the line has proven it sells.

5. Realistic timeline

  • Day 0–5: SKU list + label artwork proof.
  • Day 5–15: labeled pre-production sample approved (photo first, physical if new shapes).
  • Day 15–40: production, filling, labeling, carton packing.
  • Shipping: 5–10 days air / 25–40 days sea, plus customs.
Send your logo file and channel (Amazon / Etsy / shops) with your first inquiry — it changes the packaging recommendation, so telling us early saves a full revision round.

FAQ

Questions buyers ask about this topic

What is the smallest realistic private label start?

A tight 6–8 SKU launch in labeled bags or bottles. That is enough to look like a range on a shelf or storefront without spreading budget across slow movers. Expand from your first reorder data.

What must be printed on a craft supply label?

Brand name, product name, net weight, a non-food warning, a small-parts choking warning if kids may access it, material note, batch or SKU code, and your business contact. Marketplace sellers also need a scannable barcode (GTIN).

How long from logo file to sellable stock?

Label design and proof 3–5 days, labeled sample 7–10 days, production and packing 15–25 days, then shipping. Plan 5–7 weeks door-to-door by air, 8–12 weeks by sea.
